Title : STUDENTS’ INTERESTS AND DIFFICULTY IN UNDERSTANDING AMERICAN ENGLISH

Abstract :

This paper presents a study on the English-majored students’ interests in the standard American accent while studying at university and the difficulty they might have in understanding American accents in listening comprehension tasks in particular and in real-life situations in general. The study also addressed the same problem in order to help a group of school teachers to improve their level of English. The findings reveal that most of the students and teachers surveyed have been mainly exposed to the standard British English accent and that’s why they somehow have difficulty in understanding the standard American accent which is quite different. It is suggested that the standard American accent should be taken into account more seriously, especially at schools and universities. As a result, it is expected that those institutions should try to raise English learners’ awareness in the difference among English accents and gradually improve their listening skills.
